Balotelli has become the poster boy of kinesiology taping at the Euros and as a result we've been inundated with questions from users and the media. It's brilliant that kinesiology tape
is receiving the publicity that it deserves but in Balotelli's situation what are the 3 strips actually doing?
Rob Madden from our training company thankfully knows the answers:
The kinesiology tape
was laid down in a ‘muscle technique’
style. During application Balotelli would have placed his lower back at stretch and then the tape would have been laid down with no tension
. This in turn would have caused a response in the skin/fascia/muscles below it.
Whether it is proprioceptive feedback (the body recognising the tape has been applied)
or a lift on the tissues we know it works extremely well at;
- Reducing lower back pain
- Increasing range of motion
- Helping to reduce the onset of muscle fatigue/stiffness.
It could have been any or all of the above reasons Balotelli wore the tape. We can assume he may get some lower back tension/stiffness and the tape will help this dramatically. Or perhaps he just thought it would help with his press-ups?!
As ever, if you have any questions about kinesiology taping please do not hesitate to ask. Rob or one of our team will only be too happy to help.
