SPORTTAPE for Arm Pump

This Tweet from the insanely talented 2012 MX2 BRITISH MOTOCROSS CHAMPION, Elliot Banks-Browne, commenting that SPORTTAPE had helped to reduce Arm Pump. Prompted us to ask our taping expert Rob Madden to create a more robust application. One that could last a day in the saddle and be suitable for all bike riders.

arm pump application

If you don't know what forearm pump is read this great post from Dirt Bike Tips & Pics. In short, we've all faced it at some point when desperately trying to keep hold of a bike. It's that moment when your arms feel like they're going to burst at the seems and your grip instantly becomes that of a toddler!

The cause of arm pump..

When under extreme pressure, the blood circulating away from your arms cannot leave as quickly as the much-needed, oxygen-rich blood is coming into them, which creates a buildup of lactic acid. Pressure builds up in the forearms compressing the muscles and nerves which in turn loose their ability to function properly.

SPORTTAPE Arm Pump Application

We've seen some brilliant results from this application. However please be aware that forearm pump is often caused by several contributing factors, such as stretching, fitness & technique, for more click here.
  1. Apply 50% tension over mid-portion of tape over outside of elbow
  2. Extensors: Apply base of tape to wrist (thumb side). Put wrist into flexion stretch. Lay tape down with0% tension spiralling up to outside of elbow
  3. Extensors: Apply base of tape to wrist (little finger side). Put wrist into flexion stretch. Lay tape down with 0% tension spiralling up to inside of elbow
  4. Apply 50% tension over mid-portion of tape over inside of elbow
  5. Flexors: Apply base of tape to wrist (thumb side). Put wrist into extension stretch. Lay tape down with 0% tension spiralling up to inside of elbow
  6. Flexors: Apply base of tape to wrist (little finger side). Put wrist into extension stretch. Lay tape down with 0% tension spiralling up to outside of elbow
N.B. Always remember to apply the ends of the tape with 0% tension and round the edges. For more tips click here. This is a large coverage of tape to both top and underside of forearm. The technique can be modified and tailored to suit your needs. For example you may wish to have tape just on one aspect of the forearm that gets pumped up and tight.

The Money Shot

We'd love to know how you get on with the application! Also if you have any other requests just fire them across.
