This application is usually hidden beneath layers of leather. Developed by Isla Scott, the head physio at the IOM TT, Kinesiology Taping for Arm Pump is the MOST USED K Taping application in bike racing, and we’ve seen incredible results.

With the high speeds, force, and constant vibration through the forearms, arm pump is a huge issue for many bike riders, motor or otherwise.

TIP FOR THERAPISTS: Use opposing colours so the race medics can see the pattern and remove it easily if needed.

Kinesiology Taping for Arm Pump

WHAT CAUSES ARM PUMP?

Arm pump is caused by a restriction of blood flow through the forearms. When riding, the constant vibration and constrictive force create huge amounts of fatigue in the forearms. Because the body can’t clear the blood and waste products (such as lactic acid) fast enough, excessive blood pools within the forearms. This results in forearms that feel hard / pumped.

Kinesiology Taping is theorised to aid the blood and lymphatic flow in the area. This may help to prevent this excessive build up of blood and prevent arm pump from setting in. We’ve certainly seen great results.

HOW TO APPLY KINESIOLOGY TAPE FOR ARM PUMP

Cut an I-Strip into a fan

(If you don’t know how, check out our Taping Cuts video HERE).

Extend the arm, palm facing upwards. Then anchor the fan with 0% stretch just above the elbow on the medial side.

Lay the tails in a wave pattern from medial to lateral across the forearm with 0% stretch, finishing just above the wrist

Repeat the process starting from the lateral side and taping medially across the forearm.

Cut a small piece of tape to cover the ends of the tails around the forearm. This will prevent them peeling if the patient is wearing long sleeved clothing.

That’s it! You now know how to apply Kinesiology Taping for Arm Pump. Now go and put your tape into action.
