KINESIOLOGY TAPE FAQ'S

We've been making peerless K Tape since 2012, so there isn't much we don't know about it. Below is a list of our most frequently asked questions. However, if you don't find the answer you're looking for please get in touch

HOW DOES K TAPE WORK?

SPORTTAPE Kinesiology Tape can be used in a multitude of ways; from kinesiology taping methods to providing sensory support. Every day we see the results of kinesiology tape, however the evidential science behind the methodology is somewhat lacking, so until it catches up here are our thoughts....

Although kinesiology taping has been used by millions of people worldwide, its popularity has been gained through its clinical effectiveness at reducing pain and changing athletic function rather than hard scientific evidence. Several theories exist as to how kinesiology tape works however none have proved conclusive. To put it simply, we know it works but we're still not 100% sure how.

3 Takeaways on how WE THINK IT Works:

  • Reduce pressure on painful areas - K Tape can be applied to relieve the tension often associated with weakened or inflamed muscles and tendons. It can help by reducing the pain caused by the overload and be helpful for engaging actively in rehab.

  • Improve your ability to move - depending how the K Tape is applied it is thought to activate stretch receptors in the soft tissue which feedback to our higher brain centres. This positively influences the control of muscle tension by activating muscle spindles. This in turn improves our ability to flex and respond to the stresses and strains of increased activity.
  • Promote blood flow and lymphatic drainage - when applied to the skin with stretch the K Tape naturally wants to recoil. As a result, it lifts the skin (see above) and fascia to allow blood and lymph flow to increase which may be beneficial in the recovery of soft tissue injuries.

How long will K Tape Last?

It all depends on the application and the usage. Our tape can remain on for a number of days since it is water resistant, however we recommend that you keep it on for a maximum of 24-48hrs. The length of time will vary depending on the area of application. For example, applying to the feet may only last 1-2 days (more wear and tear)whilst the postural area could last 5+ days.

When should I use k tape?

We would ONLY recommend using kinesiology tape for the following instances:

  • Mild to moderate pain on movement or exercise
  • No major swelling or bruising
  • No major loss movement or strength
  • To help improve athletic function

PLEASE NOTE:

  • K Tape isn’t a miracle cure & should always be used alongside other treatments

  • The skill is in the application. To get maximum benefit the right combination of tape and tissue stretch is vital
  • If the tape is stretched too much it can cause irritation & the anchors must be laid with 0% stretch
  • Often the point of pain isn't the root of the cause. To get the best results ask a trained professional to assist

CAN IT BE REUSED?

Unfortunately the applications and tape are designed for single use only.

SHOULD I SHAVE BEFORE APPLYING

Shaving before applying is not necessary, however it unquestionably helps with adhesion and we would certainly recommend it for more intensive exercise. If you prefer we recommend that you trim the hair down rather than a clean shave.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I APPLY INCORRECTLY?

Put simply; nothing. Fortunately if you don’t apply to the correct area, then the tape will have little or no affect so you won’t do any harm to yourself. Just be careful not to put too much stretch on the tape and ALWAYS apply a test strip if using our K Tape for the first time.

CAN I APPLY THE TAPE MYSELF?

We would always recommend you seek the advice of a medical professional before applying K Tape. Once, checked out you can easily self-apply. There are areas of the body, which may require some help or an extra pair of hands, such as postural, lower back and shoulder, however we supply clear instructions to follow so anyone can do it.

COMMON K TAPE MYTHS BUSTED

You may have heard a few rumours about kinesiology tape applications, we’re hear to bust a few:

Myth: The colour of the tape makes a difference

It doesn’t. All of our colours are identical tapes and performance and adhesion is the same. Our branded, platinum and GB tapes are printed so contain an extra layer on top of the tape, but this doesn’t affect adhesion or stretch.

The direction that it is applied in affects performance

Nope. Myth. You can start top down or bottom up. The key is to lay the tape correctly over the area you want treated. Often this does mean wrapping a joint a specific way or starting at a specific point, but as long as it’s applied correctly over the area performance is the same.

It’s a placebo

We have seen and felt the affects of SPORTTAPE first hand, as have thousands of people around the world.

We wont lie to you, kinesiology taping applications don’t work for everyone. This can be for a multitude of reasons but often it’s down to incorrect application techniques or unrealistic expectations. Therefore we would always recommend that you visit a specialist first and study our user guides before applying the tape. As ever if you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch.
