STRAPPING FAQ'S

There isn't much we don't know sports taping. Below is a list of our most frequently asked questions. If you don't find the answer you're looking for please get in touch.

HOW DOES ZINC OXIDE TAPE WORK?

Zinc Oxide tape is used as a mechanical method of taping. By design it is non stretchy, has high tensile strength, strong adhesion and conforms to the skin. Depending on the chosen application it works by utlising these properties to provide:

  • Immobilisation
  • Support
  • Protection

WHAT ARE THE COMMON USES FOR ZINC OXIDE TAPE?

Zinc Oxide tape can be used across a variety of different sports. It's most commonly used to support ankles in sports such as Netball, Basketball and Football. To splint and support fingers in grappling sports such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and wrestling, or to support shoulders when playing Rugby.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE WHITE & TAN TAPE?

Our Zinc Oxide Tan is made from Deluxe Rayon cotton which provides unrivalled tensile strength. It is stronger and more durable than cotton tape.

CAN IT BE REUSED?

All of our tapes apart from Cohesive Bandage are single use only. Because cohesive bandage is not sticky, it cannot ‘loose stickiness’. So if you make a mistake during application you can just reapply. Should you wish Cohesive bandage can be washed and re-worn twice.

SHOULD I SHAVE BEFORE APPLYING?

Shaving before applying is not necessary, however it unquestionably helps with adhesion and we would certainly recommend it for more intensive exercise. If you prefer we recommend that you trim the hair down rather than a clean shave.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I APPLY INCORRECTLY?

Due to the nature of the tape if applied incorrectly you can inhibit blood flow. Therefore we would always recommend that you check circualtion post application and during activity.

CAN I APPLY THE TAPE MYSELF?

We would always recommend you seek the advice of a medical professional before applying. Once, checked out you can easily self-apply. There are areas of the body, which may require some help or an extra pair of hands, such as postural, lower back and shoulder, however we supply clear instructions to follow so anyone can do it.

IS ZINC OXIDE TAPE WATERPROOF?

Zinc Oxide tape is not waterproof. However, unlike other tapes, our glue is laid to make sure the tape is porous, allowing the skin to breath and moisture to wick away more easily. As a result it is more suited to withstand the demands of sport. Our Zinc Oxide tape has been used by water sports athletes with great success.

SHOULD I BE AWARE OF ANY ALLERGENS?

All of our tapes are hypoallergenic and latex free. However, if you have a known Zinc Oxide allergy you should opt for a different tape. First time tapers should always apply a small test patch of tape before you begin

HOW DO STRAPPING TAPES DIFFER FROM K TAPE?

Strapping tapes and bandages, such as Zinc Oxide and EAB are designed to 'lock-down' and immobilise joints, or provide compression. They help to prevent painful movements by restricting the amount that an area can move, or stabilise areas that are put under heavy stress during sport (such as ankles and knees). Kinesiology tapes are designed to facilitate movement - kinesiology literally means movement - so are designed to stretch and move with the body, providing dynamic support and enabling better neural feedback.

WHICH TAPE SHOULD I USE?

This will depend on the nature of your injury.

Kinesiology tapes are most often used to help reduce pain and pressure on muscle groups and joints where movement is still necessary. Injuries such as runners knee, plantar fasciitis and tennis elbow can be treated with K Tape.

Rigid Tapes such as zinc oxide can be used when movement makes the issue worse - you'll often see basketball players with their ankles taped to help stabilise the joint during the quick movements needed in the game.

Cohesive and EAB can be used to provide flexible support when the skin needs to be compressed rather than lifted. You'll see these tapes used most often around the knees and shoulders of rugby players.

If you're unsure, please to do not hesitate to get in touch with us or contact your local physiotherapist, more often than not they will be trained in taping methodology.
